Based in The Gambia, Wide Open Walls is a spectacular local village living art project.
A collaboration by Lawrence Williams (co-founder of Mandina Lodges and Makasutu Reserve) and local artist Njogu Toray (known as Bushdwellers), was the start of something special. An idea to turn part of the village of Kubuneh within the Ballabu area of The Gambia into a living art project saw street artists from around the world visit several times from 2009 to 2011 to paint graffiti art on the walls throughout the village. The result, a spectacular outdoor gallery of artwork capturing the essence of village life and the West African environment.
Today, the project has grown to more then 400 works of art across 14 villages in the area which travellers to Makasutu are welcome to visit. If you would like to view more of this unique village art, watch this YouTube clip or visit Mandina Lodges.
