How to / Care for your headdress

Our Bamileke Feather Headdresses are a beautiful and unusual art piece that require love and care for longevity.

To open, remove the string tied around the outside (images 1,2), hold the string handles on the basket base (image 3) and gently push the centre of the basket in as far as it will go for the centre feathers to open (images 4,5).

Adjust the headdress by moving the feathers gently side to side, the feather timber arms up and down and the basket in and out (images 6,7). Please do not pull at the feathers as they may come out. Mount the headdress on the wall by using one of the string handles on a picture hook.

Care and moth prevention is required with feathers, we recommend you dust the headdress every month. Remove from the wall, with feathers facing down, open and close with a gentle shake (images 3,5); follow with a dry cloth wipe or use the mid suction setting on your vaccum cleaner to gently vaccum the feathers, feather stems and timber arms. A periodic light spray (every 3-4 months) with Mortein Naturguard (or similar) is also a good moth preventative measure, just ensure to wipe off any excess spray immediately. As some feathers are dyed using natural pigment dye, colour fade may occur in direct sunlight or in a brightly lite space.

If you plan on storing your headdress for a period of time, we recommend storing folded down in a dry, sealed, plastic storage box with moth repellent.
